Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain liquids, including some flooring finishes. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Protective finishes are often formulated with solvents (or VOCs) to improve performance and durability. Products may be described as low-VOC when they give off gas significantly less than other products. Some flooring finishes qualify as low-VOC because their formulas have been modified.
VOCs may be a factor while your flooring is being installed, during the curing process, or afterward. Manufacturer's guidelines offer specific instructions about how to handle this issue during installation and afterward. If you live in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) one of our Flooring Consultants will be happy to discuss this issue with you.
